What is cellulite?
Cellulite is a depression of any shape or size seen on the surface of the skin, typically on the buttocks or thighs, with defined edges. A major underlying cause of cellulite are septa – the fibrous bands that tether your skin to the structures below.
Septa are complex.
They can be different for different women or in different parts of the body. Some septa are good (and you want them as connective tethers), but others stiffen or shrink over time and lead to the dimples you see on the surface and call cellulite.
What cellulite isn’t…
First and foremost, cellulite is not your fault. Second, cellulite is not laxity (a loss of elasticity in our skin), nor is it poor skin quality. And last, loud and clear, cellulite is not fat.
